What

This is a simple 13 part conversion for the new larger BS Astromech body to make your own BT-1 (BeeTee) assassin droid.

Why

If you haven’t had a look at the new, larger astromech bodies in the Hasbro Black Series line, the heads are easily removable. The first astromechs that Hasbro has released in the Black Series were underscaled. Too small. In 2023 they made a new astromech body that was properly scaled with the Black Series figures, then released 3 droids on the new body: R2-D2, R5-D4 and R4-6DO. After that, they announced a re-release of the BT-1 figure from the Darth Vader comic, but instead of making it on the new properly scaled astromech body, they just re-released the original, underscaled BT-1.

Process

The new astromech has a removable single head and stem piece that fits on a central shaft in the middle of the astromech body. and connects through a set of twisting and sliding actions. I took some measurements to replicate the channels inside the stem, and kept that as a separate part that is used in future droid conversion projects, like my R3 Clear Dome Astromech Conversion Kit. This kit is essentially a model kit and includes full instructions.

Painting

This guy I primed with Citadel Chaos Black. The droid body was kind of hard to prime and paint because they cannot be taken apart without breaking. I made a mount to hold the droid body by the stem, then rotated the legs 180 degrees, and extended the central leg and primed. It took 3 passes to prime it all because of the tight areas under and in the legs. I airbrushed him Vallejo Metal Air Gunmetal Gray, and hand painted the rest of the details. I used Testors Model Masters chrome and Tamiya Clear Red and Blue for most of the details.
