Docking Bay 94

Why

This is my Docking Bay 94 Entrance diorama. I initially designed it for 6″ action figures, but it will be releasing it for 3.75″ as well. I designed this mostly just to get some more experience using sculpting for texturing buildings and landscapes and stuff, like I did with my Lars Homestead Diorama.

Printing Details

The 6″ version is large, 400mm tall, and took 4 and a half days to print. The print I am working on has an incorrect doorway. This is because I finished the model and went straight to printing it. About a day into the print, I saw a behind the scenes photo of the docking bay entrance and realized I had misinterpreted what I was seeing in the actual movie footage. I evaluated, decided I could “fix it in post” so to speak, and continued the print. Then, with 3 hours left in the print, I decided to leave the house and go to dinner.

Almost as soon as I stepped out the door, the printer pulled the spool off the spool holder, up onto the print bed, where it knocked down 3 of the tree supports. That caused the very bottom 20mm (I printed it upside down) of the model to spaghettify, as it was trying to print on air. I decided even this was recoverable, and printed the bottom 20mm by itself, and then used dowels to align the pieces and glued the pieces together.

The 3.75″ version is 266mm tall and takes about a day and a half to print.

Finishing

I have started the process of correcting the doorway for Docking Bay 94. That involves cutting out the area for the new doorway. I have also applied the first coating of UV resin. Tomorrow I will apply a second coating of UV resin, and then sand. I should be able to join the 2 halves together tomorrow. Once I get that done, I will install the doorway and fill the gaps, and then it should be ready for priming and paint.

Done!

I finished painting and weathering about a week ago and forgot to post about it!
